Speed & Performance

Test connection speed, read performance results, and improve slow connections

KlarVPN includes a built-in Speed Test so users can check how a selected VPN location is performing. Use it when browsing feels slow, video calls feel unstable, streaming buffers, apps take longer to load, or a selected server feels slower than expected.

The test helps users understand the connection using five main values: download speed, upload speed, latency, jitter, and packet loss. These numbers can change from one test to another because mobile networks, Wi-Fi, ISP routing, distance, and server choice can all affect performance.

What affects VPN speed

  • Server distance: A farther VPN location usually adds more latency because traffic has to travel farther.

  • Server route: Even when two locations are in the same country, one route may perform better than another.

  • Wi-Fi or mobile signal: Weak signal, congested Wi-Fi, or unstable mobile data can reduce speed before the VPN is even involved.

  • ISP congestion: Performance can drop during busy hours or on networks that limit VPN traffic.

  • Device load: Battery saver, background downloads, and other apps can affect test results.

  • VPN encryption: Encryption protects traffic, but it can add some overhead compared with a direct connection.

Best starting point

  • Use Fastest Location for normal browsing unless you need a specific country or city.

  • If a selected region feels slow, try a physically closer location or another city in the same country.

  • Run more than one test before deciding a location is slow. Mobile and Wi-Fi conditions can change quickly.

Before running a speed test

Open the Speed Test tab from the bottom navigation. The screen lists the selected VPN Server, visible VPN IP, protocol, and test values. Before the test starts, Download, Upload, Latency, Jitter, and Packet Loss may show empty values.

If KlarVPN is currently connected, the app may ask to disconnect and run the test. This is expected. The speed test runs without the VPN tunnel so it can find the closest test server and measure the network path clearly. After the test, the app can ask whether to reconnect the VPN tunnel.

Run a speed test

1. Open Speed Test and start the test

Tap Speed Test in the bottom navigation. Confirm the selected VPN Server and VPN IP, then tap the play button to begin.

Start test

2. Tap Disconnect & Run if KlarVPN asks

When the VPN tunnel is already connected, KlarVPN asks for permission to disconnect before running the test. Tap Disconnect & Run to continue. Tap Cancel to stay connected and skip the test.

3. Wait while KlarVPN finds the test server

The first stage is Finding server. The value may show 0.0 while KlarVPN selects the speed test server and prepares the measurement.

4. Let the latency check finish

The test then measures latency. Latency is the response time between your device and the test server. Lower latency usually means the connection feels faster when opening websites, using calls, or switching between pages.

5. Let the download test finish

The download stage measures how quickly data reaches your device. This affects browsing, streaming, app downloads, and loading large pages or files.

Download - Mbps

6. Let the upload test finish

The upload stage measures how quickly your device can send data. Upload speed matters for video calls, sending files, cloud backups, and live streaming.

Upload - Mbps

7. Reconnect the VPN after the test

When the test is complete, KlarVPN may ask whether to reconnect the VPN tunnel. Tap Reconnect to resume VPN protection. Tap Not now if you want to remain disconnected.

8. Review the speed test results

The completed result lists the selected server, VPN IP, protocol, download speed, upload speed, latency, jitter, and packet loss. These values help explain whether a connection issue is related to speed, responsiveness, stability, or packet delivery.

Result

Meaning

VPN Server

The server or city selected for the test. Change this from the Speed Test or Locations screen when comparing regions.

VPN IP

The visible VPN IP assigned for that selected location.

Protocol

The connection protocol being used by the tunnel.

Download

How quickly your device receives data. This matters most for browsing, streaming, app updates, and file downloads.

Upload

How quickly your device sends data. This matters most for video calls, sending files, backups, and live streaming.

Latency

How long it takes for data to travel to the test server and back. Lower latency feels more responsive.

Jitter

How much latency changes during the test. Lower jitter is better for calls, gaming, and real-time apps.

Packet Loss

How much test traffic fails to arrive. A result close to 0% is best for a stable connection.

How to improve speed

  1. Use Fastest Location. This is usually the best option for everyday browsing because it chooses a healthy low-latency route.

  2. Choose a closer location. If a far location is slow, try a server that is physically closer to you.

  3. Try another city in the same country. If you need a specific country, another KlarVPN exit in that country may perform better.

  4. Switch networks. Try Wi-Fi and mobile data separately. This helps identify whether the issue is coming from the local network or the VPN route.

  5. Refresh the tunnel. Disconnect, wait a moment, then reconnect. This creates a fresh encrypted session.

  6. Pause heavy background activity. Large downloads, cloud sync, app updates, and streaming on other devices can reduce available speed.

  7. Retest after a few minutes. Network congestion and routing conditions can change during the day.

When a specific app feels slow

Some banking, streaming, gaming, and corporate apps detect VPN traffic or route it differently. If only one app is slow while other websites work normally, try these steps:

  • Choose a KlarVPN location in your home country if the app expects local traffic.

  • Try a different city in the same country if available.

  • Disconnect KlarVPN temporarily for that app if the service blocks VPN traffic.

  • Run Speed Test again after switching locations to compare the result.

Speed vs bandwidth

Speed and bandwidth are different. Speed is measured in Mbps on the Speed Test screen. It tells you how fast the connection is performing right now.

Bandwidth is monthly data usage. For example, a plan can include a fixed amount of data per month or unlimited bandwidth. Using more bandwidth does not automatically mean the connection is faster or slower; it only shows how much data has been used.

Common questions

Why does KlarVPN ask to disconnect before running Speed Test?

The test runs without VPN so it can find the closest speed test server and measure the direct network path. After the test, reconnect the VPN to continue using the tunnel.

Why is latency high even when download speed is okay?

Latency depends on distance, routing, Wi-Fi quality, mobile signal, and server choice. A far server may still download data but feel delayed during browsing or calls.

Why can two tests show different numbers?

Network routes change constantly. Wi-Fi signal, cellular strength, ISP congestion, and server load can make results change within minutes.

What packet loss should I look for?

Packet loss close to 0% is best. Higher packet loss can make calls unstable, video buffer, or pages fail to load.

Does a higher Mbps number always mean a better experience?

Not always. Download and upload speeds matter, but latency, jitter, and packet loss are just as important for calls, gaming, and interactive apps.
